Agate is named after the place it was first discovered from. Found in the ancient Achates River in Sicily (now the river is known as Dirillo or Acate). Theophrastus in 315BC mentioned in his treatise “On Stones” that the gemstone Agate derived its name from the Sicilian River. Research shows that Agate was used in Babylon as an amulet and ornamentation material. Its use has also been seen in Greek and Egyptian civilization. There is also evidences that Agate has been in use in India since ancient times. While the original form of Agate was found in Sicily, today varieties of the stone can be found in almost every corner of the world. Plume Agate is primarily mined from the states of Oregon and Colorado in the USA.
